Peppermint

My name is Peppermint and my foster parents like to say I am as sweet and thin as a Peppermint Stick candy. I am about 6 years old and have not had such a great life. I came to AZBHR with a bad case of heart worms. I guess my previous owners didn’t notice or care that there might be a serious reason I was so skinny. But I have had all my treatments and am beginning to feel better. I get homemade food 3 times a day so I should get to my optimal weight in a month or two.

I am also a bit skittish of sudden loud noises and quick movements near my head. But I am a lover not a fighter and get along with all my foster family members including 2 legged children, 4 fellow canines, as well as the CAT. There is nothing I like more than curling up with my foster mom and falling asleep with my head on her lap. One thing you should know is I get possessive of my favorite person and I will not let other dogs come near us if we are sitting on the couch together. Maybe if there were fewer dogs competing for attention I would share better.

June 20 Update:

Well folks it is official, the doctor says I am as healthy as they come. My weight has gone from a sickly 35 pounds to a nice, round 47-ish. One down side to this is I don’t get those great “special” meals like I used to. Now I eat regular Kibble along with my foster sisters. My beautiful coat has all grown back and I am one sexy Basset if I say so myself. I am learning to play both with my foster sisters as well as my toys. I am really hoping my Forever Family has a yard and at least one child (over 5 as sometimes I get excited and would feel terrible if I accidentally knocked a child over). I want someone to bond with and play with. Maybe I could even learn how to play fetch. Oh, and I rarely if ever bark. My foster mom can’t get over having a foster Basset that doesn’t bark, no neighbor problems here!

My Foster Mom is training me to listen to her commands. If I hear a strong “Uhuh“ I look up at her and figure out what I was doing wrong and stop, almost immediately. If I hear “Yes, OK,” then I know I did something correctly. She and I get along really well. I am almost totally house trained and I use the doggie door like a champ. I am not so good on a leash, but I know I’ll be able to get it right with your help.

I am waiting for you to find me, are you my Forever family?
