Shannon

This precious girl, Sweet Shannon, was found wandering in the
desert!
She was taken to Maricopa County Animal Control where she was not
even considered for adoption as she was so old and in such bad
condition. At about 10 years old it looked as though she had
recently had puppies. She was obviously a breeder dog. Shannon was
under weight at a mere 33 lbs. She had open wounds, runny eyes,
filthy smelly infected ears, a cough and a stiff limp in her hind
legs. Her front feet turn to the side. She was lethargic and
depressed.
AZBHR was called and asked if we could in take her. It was her last
hope. She was picked up that very afternoon and taken to a foster
home that she shares with "four legged" brothers and sisters. |

Shannon
had so many problems it was difficult to know just where to start. It is
believed she has Valley Fever and has begun treatment.. There is
medicine for her eyes, ears, inflammations, allergies and pain medicine
for a bad disk in her lower back.
Despite all this, Shannon is now a happy girl. There has never been a
cross word (growl) out of her.
She learning to be a "house dog" and has gained 2 lbs. This sweet ol'
gal will be with AZBHR for some time. Would you be her Angel?

Charlie

Hi, my name is Charlie. I am now 2 years old, and I have the energy
of a pup! My foster Mom said that I am a "special needs" dog. That
is because I had Parvo when I was only 8 weeks old and suffered from
a very high fever. Although I did recover from this awful disease,
this fever resulted in some brain damage, so I now have some
neurological problems which sometimes cause me to have seizures. On
top of that, I had to have surgery on my leg (I can run and play
like a champ now) and my eyes were very badly affected. In fact I
have had corneal transplants in both of my eyes. My medicine runs
about $100 a month for the ‘phenobarbital’ and ointments to keep my
new eyes healthy. Since I have had the transplants done I can see
better and do not become startled as easily as I used to. |
|

Since my surgeries my trainer Crystal took me under her wing and I lived
with her for some time. I learned good manners while at her home and
became what she referred to as rehabilitated and adoptable. The BEST
part of being “rehabilitated” is that I have been adopted and am living
with my “forever mom” and my older 4 legged brother, Ralph. He is the
best, and we get along great. He likes to play almost as much as I do.
We race around the house like crazy dogs and we are both so happy when
Mom comes home. It is GREAT being adopted and finding my forever home. |

Although I have been adopted my mom could use help in paying for my
expensive monthly medications. Please consider becoming my angel to make
sure I can continue to be a happy and healthy boy.

We're so proud of Sweetpea - and of ourselves and YOU! Sweetpea is one of
success stories and demonstrates how our organization is able to help dogs
in need because of generous donations from people like you. Take a look at
how Sweetpea looked when she came to us. She was pathetically thin, and her eyes were so sunken in and
unfocused that at first we thought she was blind, plus she had a Valley
Fever count that was too high to measure. This was one sick puppy! Look at
her now, have you ever seen a prettier girl? Sweetpea now eats all her food
and has a lovely coat, her Valley Fever count is still high and she remains
on medicine for that, she is also on pain medicine due to Valley Fever
lesions in her jaw and leg. Her next Valley Fever test is coming up soon and
we're keeping our fingers crossed that it has come down again. Most
importantly though, her vision is back to normal, she has been seen several
times by an ophthalmologist and has now been discharged. |

Sweetpea is full of energy and runs and plays like a puppy, we
think she's making up for lost time. She is house-trained using a doggie
door and is so sweet and easy-going that she gets along great with all her
foster brothers. She is still very afraid of men and needs to be in a
ladies-only home, unless you are willing to have the time and patience she
needs to learn how to trust again. |

|
Here's some updated Pictures (2/20/08), You can tell I'm
doing MUCH better now!
Sweetpea is a very special girl, so if you'd like to make her yours,
please send us an application and come and meet her.

Mayzie
joined the rescue because she has Valley Fever and her owners could no longer
afford her care. She had a reaction to the traditional Valley Fever medication
so she has been taking an alternate medication that appears to be working. We
have them compounded by a local pharmacy as the brand-name pills are over $10.00
each. She will need to take these pills for a minimum of 6 months and then will
need further testing. Her medications are $215.84 each month. Marcia sends us
this update on Mayzie…
June Update: For everyone and anyone who knows Mayzie, she
celebrated her two year anniversary with us on June 16. My husband and I decided
to adopt her for two reasons 1) we fell in love with her at first site. and 2) I
decided that she was the best birthday present I could ask for.
Mayzie still has VF (unfortunately) and she does go back in to see Dr. Munion in
November. I think she will have it the rest of her life . You'd never know she
has it though - she runs, plays, sits on your lap in the swing, and chases
a tennis ball around the yard.

Noelle
Please welcome Noelle to AZBHR. She is a sweet, easy going 11 yr. old
girl who has been through a very traumatic experience. Before she was
relinquished to our Rescue, she was attacked by
two
large dogs and suffered severe injuries to her left front leg. She was
only given minimal treatment until she was turned over to AZBHR. She was
immediately taken to the special vets at Four Legged Friends, and was
hospitalized for several days to be treated for extensive infection. She
then had surgery to repair the structural damage that was discovered in
her leg. |
Noelle is Sponsored by

Noelle is a bit dog shy with those she does not know, and will be
rather protective of her doggy dish (full or not) and space, but has
adjusted well to the other three basset girls in her new home. And they
have learned to respect her. She likes to be near her foster mom as much
as possible. Other than trips to the vet and physical therapist, she
hasn't ventured out into the world yet, but hopes to learn how to ride
in a wagon so she can give the doggy park a try. She is fully immunized
and has a microchip. She is on long term medication to control pain.
Noelle gets a little better every day, and even though she may never
be as good as new, she is hoping to some day find a happy forever home
that can accept, care for, and love this precious girl.
|
UPDATE:
Noelle is nearing the end of her physical therapy, and hopes to
find her forever home soon. She has improved more than expected, but
is still not using her injured leg to bear weight. She continues to
complain of pain during stretching and movement exercises, but her
medication and lots of loving encouragement helps with the
discomfort. Now fully recovered from her surgery, she is a happy,
outgoing dog that can keep up with her foster sisters in almost
every way. She particularly likes to play with her newest friend,
Frederica, and will try to put her bad leg down during the play. A
new home with a companion to wrestle with would be ideal to continue
to encourage her to try to use the leg, and give her a better chance
to regain some use of the leg. However, her life as a three legged
dog is not much of a problem for her any longer. Her biggest
setback: she can't climb the stairs to join the rest of the family
at bedtime. For more information on Noelle, please contact

Angel Program Benefits, Details, and Instructions
You can still help even if you can’t adopt or
be a foster home to one of our precious Basset Hounds, Blood Hounds, and mixes
by becoming an Angel for the Arizona Basset Hound Rescue (AZBHR).
The Angel Program allows you to sponsor one
to multiple dogs that are listed on our Angel page. The dogs that are listed on
this page need extra support because they have had expensive medical treatment
or are forever fosters due to their condition. AZBHR is passionate about our
dogs, and always makes sure that they have the best care and quality of life
because they deserve nothing less.
Become an Angel to dogs in need by pledging a
minimum of $10.00 per month to sponsor one or more dogs in our Angel program.
You can also opt to make a one-time payment for a minimum of $120.00, which will
sponsor your dog for a year. Of course, you can choose to pay any amount over
the minimum, and don’t forget that these donations are tax-deductible because we
are a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue organization. Becoming an Angel is as easy as
1, 2, 3:
-
Visit our website (www.azbassetrescue.com)
and choose the dog or dogs that you would like to sponsor and become their
‘guardian’ Angel.
-
complete the online form, select your
payment frequency, and pay via PayPal, Check, or money order.
(Please send checks or money orders to AZBHR, POB 3056,
Gilbert, AZ, 85299. Attention: AZBHR Angel)
-
A thank you note and picture of the dog
or dogs that you have chosen to sponsor will be sent to you, which also
serves as your tax receipt, and your name will be placed next to the sponsor
dog or dogs on our website as Angel Sponsors.
In the event that a dog in the Angel program
is adopted or goes to the Rainbow Bridge, all funds collected will still be
applied toward their medical treatment and, if excess funds exist, that money
will be put toward other dogs in our foster program.
In 2006, AZBHR’s dog expenses were $75,375.
With your generous donation, we can continue to provide top-notch care to all
the precious hounds in need.
