Volunteering With AZBHR

Arizona Basset Hound Rescue (AZBHR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all volunteer rescue. AZBHR is always looking for people who are willing to help those Basset Hounds. There are many ways you can volunteer with AZBHR and they are described below. You'll find that "the basset family" at AZBHR are as much fun as they are hard workers!

Becoming a Foster Home

Being a foster home for a Basset in need is probably the most important way you can help!  As a foster home you take in a homeless hound that we've rescued, care for them, love them, get them acquainted with a healthy home-life, and make sure they're treated right until we find a good home for them. Sometimes you'll need to nurse them back to health (all vet bills are paid for by AZBHR), but that is very rewarding to see them thrive under your care.

As a foster, you'll be expected to get to know the dog for at least two weeks.  This affords you the ability to learn what they like and don't like (such as kids and cats), find if they have any special needs, and just evaluate their overall personality.  By doing this, you help determine the right type of household to place that dog into once they're ready for adoption.

Yes, it can be difficult to let them go after you've gotten to know them and love them, but it is also very rewarding to know that they're going to the right home.  But best of all, You'll know that you have actually helped save a life!

Checking the Shelters

We don't know when a basset is in need.  Because of that "lack of opposing thumb" thing, they can't call us on the phone to tell us they're trapped in the shelter needing to be rescued.  AZBHR doesn't immediately take in all Bassets that are in the shelters, but if they're too sick to be adopted, or their owners never come to claim them (which happens way too often), or if they're in danger of being put down, we will step in ad "rescue" them to find them a home.

AZBHR has developed relationships with many of the shelters but we need to make sure that no Basset Hounds get missed and don’t get euthanized before AZBHR can rescue the dog. Volunteers would be asked to walk a specific shelter at least once a week. You don’t have to commit to doing walks weekly you could opt to do it monthly and AZBHR will find other volunteers to assist. There are shelters throughout Arizona and we need volunteers to spread the word about AZBHR at their local shelters. A listing will be provided at volunteer training.

Note: You must be at least 18 years old for this duty.

Transportation

Because our foster dogs are scattered throughout the state, we often have the need to get a dog from one place to another.  Sometimes we'll even adopt of state, and dog needs to go to California, New Mexico, or Colorado, just to name a few places.  Most the time, arrangements are made to meet someone "halfway", such as Casa Grande when going between Phoenix and Tucson.

We also occasionally have the need to have other items such as food, crates, beds, etc. moved around.  All your mileage is tax-deductible.

Help with Home Visits

When AZBHR receives an adoption application, we screen the potential home to ensure they can provide a good home and good quality of life for a Basset Hound.  We visit their home, talk to them about the rescue and Bassets in general, and find out what they are looking for in adopting a Basset Hound.  We also need to know if the home has any special considerations, such as small children, that may preclude adopting specific dogs into their home.

The goal is not to judge the home or the people, rather to ensure that we find the right match of home and dog.  And not only can you take your friendly Basset Hound with you on home visits, we encourage it!

Help with Special Events

AZBHR has several big fundraising events every year, spread out throughout the year. Putting on the events requires a lot of work, so we are always looking for volunteers to help. We need people to help with everything such as setting up tables and booths, cooking or supplying food, running activities during the events, helping to sell merchandise or raffle tickets and so much more!

  • Waddle O’ the Green: (March) AZBHR waddles in the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Central Ave in downtown Phoenix to raise money via pledges of the Bassets in the parade. It’s a great time and after the parade we head over to the park for a lunch, raffles and relaxation.

  • Basset Ball: (in the fall) AZBHR held it’s First Annual Basset Ball in 2006 featuring silent and live auction items to bid on by attendees along with a sit down dinner. Volunteers are needed to help procure donations from business for auction items, developing invitations and helping at the event.

  • Howl-O-Ween: (October) Basset Hounds were made to be dressed up and that’s exactly what we do at Howl-O-Ween. AZBHR has costume judging, Basset games, raffles and so much more.

  • “Santa Paws”: (December) Pet Photos at Three Dog Bakery in Phoenix. The name says it all – folks bring their dogs to the stores to have a photo with Santa for the holidays and your help (Santa, photographer or elves) is needed in November and December.

  • PACC911 Events: Events are held throughout the year. AZBHR has a booth to distribute AZBHR information and we encourage you to bring your Basset Hound along. Most events are held in the Phoenix area.
